Imagine flying over different islands, viewing dozens of different surf breaks. When you select the best break, you land right on the water, and pull up to it. The use of sea planes to get to surf spots is dramatically revolutionizing the sport. Boats are very slow compared to sea planes, and they only allow a surfer to check out a few spots. By using a sea plane, a surfer can check out multiple spots in less time. When a spot looks good, just land the plane down next to the break, pull up, and surf.
Right now, only a small handfull of people are using this method of transport to reach the breaks. Billabong announced their production of the Billabong clipper, a sea plane built to transport surfing's elite around the globe in search of new spots.
For the adventurous surfer, the idea of a sea plane should not seem too out of reach. In the coming years there will surely be a surge in this type of surf safari. |
